It is with a mixture of sadness and gratitude that the Western States Center Board of Directors announces Kelley Weigel’s departure as Executive Director, effective September 1st, 2017. Over the last 15 years, Kelley has been instrumental in connecting and building the power of community organizations in our region and making sure the Center provides support to movements that challenge and transform individuals, organizations, and systems to achieve racial, gender, and economic justice. Her inspiring leadership will
leave a permanent legacy at the organization. While we will miss her, as well as her vision and passion for justice, we wish her the best of luck in her new endeavors. We also want to express our sincere gratitude for her years of dedicated service to fulfilling the Center’s mission.  This includes leading our staff in producing a number of significant accomplishments, including:
  • Supporting the staff and leaders of color who together created We are BRAVE (Building Reproductive Autonomy and Voices for Equity), which connects reproductive justice and its intersections with immigrant rights, youth movements, economic justice, health equity, and tribal sovereignty.  Thanks to their efforts, Oregon is on the verge of passing the most progressive and inclusive reproductive health equity policy in the nation, The Reproductive Health Equity Act (HB 3391);
  • Creating the VOTE program, increasing the capacity of 24 groups across five states to sharpen their political insight, mobilize and organize their community members, and catalyze collaboration among organizations and communities. Our strategy focused not just turning out votes on Election Day, but also on ensuring people engage with their lawmakers and public officials throughout the year;
  • Working with 47 groups, which serve over 200,000 members across the West, through our Uniting Communities, We are BRAVE, and VOTE program cohorts;
  •
  • Publishing multiple editions of Uniting Communities: The Toolkit, Enlazando Comunidades: El Juego Herramientas, The Tribal Equity Toolkit: Tribal Resolutions, Codes to Support Two Spirit and LGBTQ Justice in Indian Country, and the We are BRAVE Toolkit;
  • Providing support for initiative and policy campaigns for same-sex marriage and banning predatory lending, in addition to housing the campaign for driver cards for undocumented Oregonians; and
  • Publishing and coordinating the coalition behind Oregon’s Racial Equity Legislative Report: Facing Race, which put a bright spotlight on state policies from 2009-2015.
Over the next few months, we will be conducting a search to find Western States Center’s next Executive Director. During this transition period, it is our priority to identify the best leader for the Center while maintaining a stable and effective organization. We ask for your help in identifying candidates who can help the Center continue along this successful trajectory. Please share the attached job announcement with individuals, organizations, and networks that might assist us in finding Kelley’s successor.

As board members, we are well aware of the source of the Center’s strength: You! The Center will flourish and grow only with your sustained support  – through programming, community awareness, and your financial contributions. As we all look forward to Western State Center’s 30th anniversary, we expect to work with our next Executive Director to ensure that this organization maintains its position as a powerful movement builder and supporter in our region.

Again, we cannot thank Kelley enough for the dedication, passion, enthusiasm, and motivation she has given our organization over the past 15 years. Our staff, board, volunteers, and supporters will miss her tremendously. We look forward to following her continued successes in her next venture and are excited for the next chapter of Western States Center. Her full resignation letter is below.
