In this issue: Help Washington Families Stay Together; Urge Oregon Board of Education to ban the use of Indian Mascots in public schools; Racial Equity in Action: The Video!

Dear friend,

This month we are proud to share some of the ways groups in Oregon and Washington are flexing their political power. In Oregon efforts to ban the use of Indian mascots in public school is pressing forward while across the border a Family Assessment Response bill is awaiting the governor to sign into law.

We've released a behind-the-scenes video on the making of Oregon's first Legislative Report Card on Racial Equity.

In solidarity,

Help Washington Families Remain Together.

Foreclosures and unemployment have led to record levels of stress, hunger, and homelessness for families. For many, these challenges are compounded by investigations from Child Protective Services. Join us to urge Washington Governor Gregoire to sign Family Assessment Response into law, which allows state workers to form partnerships with parents in the services and resources they need to safely keep their children at home.

I Am A Person, Not A Mascot

Se-ah-dom Edmo

Se-ah-dom of the Oregon Indian Education Association shares her personal story with Indian mascots: "As an adult my father gets choked up recalling the days when people in his town would ‘ask’ him to wear his traditional regalia and dance before sports games. It is a painful memory disconnected from any genuine reverence or respect for Indian People. These were the same town people who would not serve his family at stores and restaurants."

Read on and urge The Oregon Board of Education to ban the use of Indian mascots in public schools.
