Final We are Powerful - Coming out for Social Justice

#weRpowerful #out4socialjustice

A cornerstone of social justice is that we are able to define for ourselves the issues that affect our communities the most. Despite inspiring wins for marriage equality, LGBTQ people of color continue to fight multiple attacks of racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia. These attacks are made worse by the isolation and invisibility that can surround LGBTQ people of color in their families, communities, organizations and social justice movements.

Ten organizations from the Uniting Communities program of Western States Center collaborated to work on a social media campaign we call, Coming Out for Social Justice - We are Powerful. Coming Out for Social Justice is a week of action leading up to National Coming Out Day on October 11.

For five days from October 6-10, we - and our allies for racial and gender justice - describe critical issues around which local LGBTQ people of color in our region are organizing and supporting local campaigns.  It takes organizing and advocacy led by queer and trans people of color (QTPOC) to shift the balance of power and inequality, advance our values of gender justice and put into place systemic remedies that make meaningful changes in our lives. Like our leaders who’ve come before us, our communities and allies resist, fight and transform. Please join us on this Week of Action!

Each day next week, blog posts sharing the stories by and of people living at multiple intersections, including queer and trans people of color, will run on this website.

Support for LGBTQ People of Color-Led Organizations

LGBTQ people of color-led organizations are actively building community and working towards change - change by and for their communities. Our coalitions and movements would not be effective and cannot function unless we follow the leadership and listen to the wisdom of LGBTQ people of color as we develop campaigns to support priorities they identify.

One way we live this value is to prioritize the financial sustainability of LGBTQ people of color-led organizations. In addition to highlighting the action opportunities of all ten Uniting Communities groups, during this campaign we are focusing on fundraising for LGBTQ people of color-led groups. We ask that you make a contribution to support the ever-growing and impactful work of PFLAG Portland Black Chapter and Entre Hermanos, two organizations that are part of Uniting Communities.
