Groups Call on Elected Officials to Reject Anti-Democratic Gatherings in Idaho and Montana

On June 13, a broad array of anti-democratic groups will gather from across the Northwest in Kootenai County, Idaho to hear speeches from leaders in the anti-government, alt-right and paramilitary movements. Many of these leaders have used threats and intimidation against their political opponents across Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. A smaller, allied event will take place the same day in Helena, Montana. In response, a coalition of civic organizations including United Vision for Idaho, Montana Human Rights Network, Peace & Justice Action League of Spokane, Greater Spokane Progress and Western States Center, issued the following statement:

“The COVID-19 pandemic has strained our society, economy and democracy. Such times call for unity. We believe that we are stronger when we stand together, but we know that some are seeking to use the crisis to their advantage.

“Anti-democratic and bigoted groups have sought to harness genuine fear and hardship in our communities to claim the spotlight, recruit members and expand their influence. The Kootenai County event features a who’s who of extremists, including some who openly embrace violence.

“The event comes on the heels of militia mobilizations based on unfounded rumors of anti-fascist activity, and hostility to anti-police brutality protests. The militias have created a dangerous situation, which has already led to businesses in some communities shutting down due to fear of violence and harassment. We anticipate that militia members will be in attendance on June 13.

“The event organizers have a right to free speech, and we have the right and responsibility to speak out against bigotry and for a democracy that includes and protects everyone. We believe we are all stronger together and believe in the right of every person to live free from fear and bigotry.

“Our democratically elected officials have a responsibility to stand up for inclusive democracy and strong institutions that protect our rights, well-being and public lands. We call on them to use the power of their offices to reject the June 13 gatherings and advance the interests of the entire community.”
