Western States Center Statement on Far-Right Rumors and Vigilantes
Eric Ward, executive director of Western States Center, released the following statement:
“Armed vigilantes in Oregon are adding real danger to an already devastating wildfire crisis, in pursuit of an imagined threat. By setting up highway checkpoints and threatening members of the press in response to widely debunked rumors about antifascists starting fires, vigilantes are hampering Oregonians’ ability to travel and sowing fear during a state of emergency.
“This is the latest example of paramilitaries and vigilantes capitalizing on chaos and fear to build their own political power, undermine community safety and chill democratic practice. While perhaps not surprising, it is tragic to see another round of disinformation followed by armed far-right reaction during an unprecedented natural disaster.
“Law enforcement has often responded aggressively to racial justice protesters in our region while taking a hands-off, or even friendly, approach to far-right extremists. While there have been some helpful statements by the Oregon Police Bureau, the Clackamas County Sheriff and others attempting to dissuade vigilantism and denounce harmful rumors, others have given greater oxygen to these rumors and fanned the flames of extremism.
“We must see a consistent and effective response from all levels of government to denounce vigilantism. These are dangerous times and elected officials and law enforcement must make crystal clear that there is no space for political violence. Western States Center calls on the attorney generals of California, Oregon and Washington to urgently consult with one another to address disinformation and vigilantism during these devastating wildfires.”
