Coalition calling for Rep. Nearman to quickly leave office - one way or another - grows
An expanded coalition of Oregon leaders is calling for Rep. Mike Nearman to resign and if he continues to refuse, to be removed from office as quickly as possible. It has been more than two months since video footage caught Rep. Nearman on camera opening the door to far-right extremists who attacked state police, journalists and the capitol.
“There’s growing consensus that Mike Nearman’s actions were irresponsible and reckless,” said Eric K. Ward, Executive Director of Western States Center. “His decision to endanger the safety of his colleagues, capitol security personnel and others makes him unfit to serve in the Oregon legislature. There is no need for a drawn out process. He should resign or be removed as soon as possible.”
The coalition of more than 40 organizations demanding that Nearman resign or be removed from office includes Causa Oregon, the Fair Shot For All Coalition, Family Forward Oregon, Forward Together Action, the Oregon Education Association, the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon.
Those groups join organizations whose support for Nearman’s removal had been previously announced, including Oregon League of Conservation Voters, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon, Basic Rights Oregon, Eugene/Springfield NAACP, Oregon Wild, Rural Organizing Project, PCUN, Oregon Food Bank, Renew Oregon, SEIU Local 49 and SEIU Local 503.
