Western States Center Responds to Nearman Expulsion
Following a two-thirds vote by the Oregon House of Representatives to expel State Rep. Mike Nearman, Western States Center executive director Eric K. Ward issued the following statement:
“Mike Nearman violated the trust of those who voted for him, and the trust of all Oregonians, when he facilitated the violent breach of the Oregon State Capitol. He knowingly jeopardized the safety of his colleagues, Oregon State Police and Oregon’s democracy with his actions.
“In early January, we began working with a broad coalition of Oregon groups pushing for Nearman to be held accountable and removed from office. Today’s overwhelming vote isn’t just about Nearman, it’s a vote of confidence in Oregon’s democracy.
“Oregonians were able to watch as Nearman, caught on security tape, helped violent extremists—including some who were armed—bypass security and enter the locked Capitol building, where they scuffled with law enforcement and threatened legislators and staff. It was clear to us then that he must be removed, but it wasn’t clear whether partisan politics would allow it.
“We applaud legislators for overcoming partisan and personal differences to take a firm stand today against extremism. Our elected leaders must never resort to harassment and intimidation to advance their agendas.”
