Democracy prevailed on January 6th, 2021
At this very moment four years ago, pro-Trump rioters – including members of the violent anti-democracy group the Proud Boys – overran the perimeter of the U.S. Capitol building and later entered the building. Now, President-elect Trump is expected to set another dangerous precedent by pardoning the insurrectionists.
The attempted insurrection threatened our democracy, but it’s important to remember it was exactly that — a failed attempt.
Today, we celebrate that democracy prevailed on January 6th, 2021 and we remember that most Americans reject political violence and support a peaceful transfer of power.
As we approach Trump’s inauguration, it can feel like the progress we've made is being unraveled, but we don’t have to sink into despair—that’s what our opposition is counting on to keep us from pushing back.
The road ahead may not be easy, but by grounding ourselves in connection and joy today, we strengthen our justice movements and our resolve.
Tell us: Where are you finding solidarity and joy today?
As we move through January, remember this quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”
We know that most Americans share our vision for a future where we all have the freedom to be ourselves, live with safety and joy, and pursue our dreams.
We are the majority.
We are strong.
And, when we sustain and fuel our movement, we are the winning tide that can overcome bigotry, white nationalism, and political violence.
