Western States Center Applauds Courageous Defense Against Recent Attack on Democracy in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

Portland, Ore. — Today, Western States Center — a non-partisan organization that works to strengthen inclusive democracy and help communities and institutions counter organized bigotry and anti-democracy activity — issued the following statement from Executive Director Amy Herzfeld-Copple:

“Western States Center applauds Dr. Teresa Borrenpohl for her bravery in defending inclusive democratic values at the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee town hall meeting in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She displayed remarkable courage, safeguarding freedom of speech and our collective right to express our opinions peacefully even when we disagree with those in power.

We stand firm against the growing threats of violence that have impacted the Coeur d'Alene community, including a legislator who has been targeted in recent months. We also recognize the involvement of unmarked private security forces in a violent incident at a public town hall is a troubling sign for local communities.

All over the country, bigoted and anti-democracy movements use threats, intimidation, and outright violence to build power. These actors refuse to engage with their diverse communities and publicly silence opposition when it breaks through because they know these tactics can have a chilling effect on civic participation and discourse.

Dr. Borrenpohl and the Coeur d’Alene community have shown that non-violent protest and direct action are effective tools to confront these dangerous forces on the rise across our nation.

Western States Center also applauds the rapid and clear response from the City of Coeur d’Alene and local institutions. The Coeur d’Alene Police Department swiftly announced that they had revoked the license of the unmarked security firm and dropped the charges against Dr. Borrenpohl, providing a high level of transparency during an ongoing investigation; statements affirming the right to free speech were issued by the Coeur d'Alene School District and the Coeur d’Alene Police Department. These actions reflect the spirit of a community fiercely committed to defending the fundamental freedoms that unite us all.

By taking quick action to respond to this incident of political violence, Coeur d’Alene is setting a powerful example for what it means to ensure a democracy that is inclusive and just. We also look forward to seeing the results of the ongoing investigations into Sheriff Norris’ role in this anti-democracy attack and trust that accountability will continue to be upheld through a fair and thorough process.

Western States Center will continue supporting communities nationwide working to defend democracy and build a future where all people can live, love, worship, and work free from bigotry and fear.”
