Western States Center Partners with Award-winning Author to Launch Reader’s Guide for Inclusive Democracy
As part of its ongoing effort to protect inclusive democracy, Western States Center today unveiled a new reader’s guide to Cynthia Miller-Idriss’ “Hate in the Homeland: The New Global Far Right” in conjunction with the book’s paperback release today.
“Those of us who care about inclusive democracy need meaningful tools to protect our civic institutions. That’s exactly what this book provides,” said Eric K. Ward, Executive Director of the Western States Center. “We need community leaders at every level–from the grassroots to the federal government–to take the threat of white nationalism seriously. In recent years, bigoted and hateful groups have successfully targeted young-adults who are still developing their worldviews. Resources like Hate in the Homeland are critical to helping to propel the pro-democracy movement forward.”
In her book, Miller-Idriss details how white nationalists have exploited social and economic tensions in our country, as well as the role that technology has played in mobilizing followers of the far-right, especially young people. In reaction to the success of social justice movements in recent years, these groups repeatedly found opportunities to manipulate and intensify public unrest as the nation continues to weather the ongoing pandemic. “Hate in the Homeland” explores the rise and evolution of the modern white nationalist movement, as well as the ways in which these groups are formed and their aggressive growth strategies, both online and in person.
The reader’s guide launched today provides comprehension and discussion questions for educators, parents, book clubs, and individuals looking for a better understanding of how the white nationalist movement operates in our modern information ecosystem, as well as chapter summaries and other support materials.
