WASHINGTON MUSIC AND CULTURAL VENUE COHORT
IN SUPPORT OF INCLUSIVE DEMOCRACY

MARCH - APRIL 2025
FOUR WEEKLY VIRTUAL SESSIONS
$1500 stipend provided

COHORT DESCRIPTION

At Western States Center (WSC), we recognize the vital role cultural spaces play in building belonging and resisting anti-democracy and bigoted movements. Amid challenges such as political polarization, rising inequality, and threats to marginalized communities, venues are uniquely positioned to serve as hubs for storytelling, gathering, and positive transformation.

WSC’s Culture Lab is excited to host a cohort of 5-8 Washington music and cultural venue owners to explore the critical role venues play in building an inclusive democracy, fostering safety and strengthening communities. Across four weeks, this cohort will help to refine strategies and resources to support Washington’s venues in building safety and belonging for their communities.

Expectations:

  • Participation: Join four weekly 90-minute virtual sessions in March-April (exact dates TBA).

  • Collaboration: Refine strategies and resources for Washington’s music and cultural venues.

  • Engagement: Share experiences and insights to strengthen the statewide network of venues.

  • Compensation: Participants receive a $1,500 stipend for their contributions to the program.

About Western States Center:
Based in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain States, Western States Center works nationwide to strengthen inclusive democracy. Since 1987 our programs have lifted up the voices of marginalized communities while providing accessible tools and support for grassroots organizing, civic engagement, and collective action that has resulted in concrete policy and institutional changes across the West and beyond. We play a catalytic role in changemaking by working with community partners and culture makers to build people-centered movements, develop new leaders, and shift narratives to achieve a more just, equitable and inclusive democracy.
